COM 512, 3 hrs
Communication and Diversity in the Workplace
This is a Master of Science in Administrative Studies
Applied Communication option area course. Exploration of current theory
and research regarding communication and diversity in the workplace. Study
of practical applications for the assessment and training of communication
skills relative to culture, race, sex, age, disability, sexual orientation
and other diversity issues. Emphasis is placed on improving understanding
of communication similarities and differences among diverse population
groups. Includes readings, class discussion, observation, and/or class
projects about assessment and training in communication skills in a diverse
workplace.

Dr. Randy Dillon is an Associate Professor and Director of the
Graduate Program in the Department of Communication at Missouri State University. He has been at Missouri State University since 1994 teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses in intercultural communication,
interpersonal communication, communication theory, and research
methods. He received a University Teaching Award (1998), the Missouri State University
Excellence in Advising Award as well as an Outstanding Advisor Award
from the National Academic Advising Association (both in 2000),
and Outstanding Graduate Faculty Member and College Service Awards
(2002). Dillon was an Assistant Department Head in the Department
of Communication (1998-2000), and has taught a semester in Missouri State University’s
Missouri-London Program. His research interests include intercultural
communication in helping relationships, and the use of public dialogue
in communities to discuss sensitive. He was recognized by the Mayor
and the City of Springfield for his public dialogue work for the
Good Community’s Every Kid Counts initiative. Dillon is a
native of Cass County Missouri, earned his BA from the College of
the Ozarks, his MS from the University of Louisiana – Lafayette,
and his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida.
In addition to teaching at Missouri State University, Dillon has taught in Japan, South
Korea, and Great Britain.
He has also lived and worked in Dallas, Texas and Seattle, Washington.
