COM 632 899, 3 hrs
Theories and Concepts of Small Group Communication
This is a Master of Science in Administrative Studies Applied Communication option area course. Survey of theories and concepts related to communication in small groups. Topics include group development, roles, norms, leadership, cohesiveness, decision making, conflict, interaction analysis, and research approaches to small group communication.

Gloria J. Galanes, Professor in the Department of Communication and Mass Media, is also acting head of that department. She has degrees from University of Michigan (AB, English), Bowling Green University (MA, Student Personnel Administration), and The Ohio State University (Ph.D., Communication). In 1986, she came to Missouri State University in 1986, where At SMS, she has taught organizational communication, communication and aging, quantitative analysis, introduction to research designs, applied research, and small group communication, which is her specialty area. She is co-author of two small group textbooks, Effective Group Discussion, the tenth edition of which is now in production, and Communicating in Groups, now in its fourth edition, both published by McGraw-Hill. She also has produced, with Mark Biggs, two video tapes about small group communication that are used as ancillaries to the texts.

Before returning to graduate school for her doctorate, Dr. Galanes worked for Ohio State University’s Lima Campus in a variety of administrative capacities, including as Public Information Officer and Director of Continuing Education. At Missouri State University, she was the University’s first Director of the Citizenship and Service Learning Program, which she helped develop and got off the ground before being asked to serve as acting department head.

Dr. Galanes enjoys reading, traveling, and theatre. Her family includes Noah Karrasch, self-employed Rolfer in Springfield, stepdaughter Molly, a junior at Greenwood High School, and cats Teddy and Cindy.
