Communication

COM 636, 3 hrs
Concepts and Analysis of Communication in Organizations

Formerly COM 638 - This course is a core requirement for the Master of Science in Administrative Studies. Advanced study of communication in organizations. Applications of traditional and contemporary theories of communication and organizations in current research and practice. Particular attention is given to the symbolic nature of organizing and to the analysis of organizational culture.

Dr. Bourhis is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Mass Media and has earned degrees from the University of Arizona and the University of Minnesota. His primary research interests include the role of communication in socializing organizational members; the use of stories by organizational members to communicate culture; the use of technology in the classroom, particularly electronic mail; and the effects of communication apprehension in classroom environments. Dr. Bourhis is widely published in his discipline on these particular issues. He teaches a variety of courses including: organizational communication, interviewing, survey research methods, small group communication and public speaking. He has been recognized by the university with awards for his teaching and service. Dr. Bourhis was recently selected to serve for one year as an Missouri State University Academic Affairs Fellow.
