Special Topics and Issues in Criminal Justice
Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
A variable topic course examining issues of crime, its causes, as well as social and political responses to crime by various institutions including government,
media, law enforcement, and courts, and corrections. May be repeated for up to 6 credit hours when the topic changes.

Instructor: Dr. Bernard J. McCarthy
Bernard J. McCarthy is Visiting Professor of Criminology and Director of the Center for Community and Social Issues at Missouri State University. He is on leave from his position as Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida. He received his PhD in Criminology from the Florida State University and a Master’s in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York in Albany. He has served as a consultant to criminal justice agencies on a variety of projects. Most recently he has worked with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange County Corrections and served as a Board member of Crime Line of Central Florida (the Crime Stoppers Program). His research interests focus on the impact of policy changes on criminal justice operations and program evaluation. Recently he has been examining the impact of homeland security initiatives on criminal justice policy, specifically the impact of terrorism on the tourist industry.
