Topics in Homeland Defense and Security

Prerequisite: CRM 640 or permission of instructor. A comprehensive and integrated homeland security and defense strategy must also include the full range of elected officials, first responders, the human, animal and plant health communities, business and our citizens. In this course we will examine the application, progress and problems of the development and implementation of a homeland security/defense strategy.

Dr. Bernard McCarthyInstructor: Dr. Bernard McCarthy

Bernard J. McCarthy is Professor of Criminology and Director of the Center for Community and Social Issues at Missouri State University.  He received his PhD in Criminology from Florida State University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the State University of New York in Albany.  He has served as a consultant to criminal justice agencies on a variety of projects.  Most recently he has worked with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Orange County Corrections and served as a Board member of Crime Line of Central Florida (the Crime Stoppers Program). His research interests focus on the impact of policy changes on criminal justice operations and program evaluation. Recently he has been examining the impact of homeland security initiatives on criminal justice policy, specifically the impact of terrorism on the tourist industry.
