This course is a study of the social, emotional, cognitive, and language development of young children through play. Attention is given to the use of play in the organization and development of the early childhood classroom and curriculum. Current models of early childhood curriculum and their relationship to support of play will be explored.

Instructor: Denise Cunningham
Dr. Denise Cunningham is an Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education is the newest member of the department. She graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her areas of specialization are early childhood education and reading. Dr. Cunningham teaches methods courses dealing with content (e.g. literacy, communication arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Dr. Cunningham brings with her experience as a primary teacher and literacy coach in the St. Louis Public Schools. Her research interests lie in early education opportunities for at-risk children, literacy development through play, and constructivist education for adult learners.
