Family Literacy
Introduction to the philosophy and theory behind family literacy, as well as discussion on the development and implementation of a family literacy program. The four-component model of adult education, early childhood education, parent and child together (PACT), and parenting will be covered, both in theory and practical application. Explores the rationale for and characteristics of comprehensive family literacy, focusing upon the families being served, services being provided, outcomes being achieved, and the role and responsibilities of individuals, organizations, and communities involved.

Instructor: Denise Cunningham
Dr. Denise Cunningham is an Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education is the newest member of the department. She graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Her areas of specialization are early childhood education and reading. Dr. Cunningham teaches methods courses dealing with content (e.g. literacy, communication arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Dr. Cunningham brings with her experience as a primary teacher and literacy coach in the St. Louis Public Schools. Her research interests lie in early education opportunities for at-risk children, literacy development through play, and constructivist education for adult learners.
