History of the English Language

Course Description: This course will survey the development of the English language, beginning with Old English and its Indo-European background, and continuing through Middle English and Early Modern English to Present-Day English. Beyond gaining a familiarity with the structure of earlier forms of English, students will explore how and why the language has changed over the last 1500 years (and continues to change).

Dr. Michael EllisInstructor: Dr. Michael Ellis

Professor Michael Ellis has been is a faculty member in the English Department at Missouri State University since 1988 and teaches courses in linguistics and medieval literature. His research interests include writing and language change in Anglo-Saxon England, as well as the development of present-day regional dialects of American English. He has published articles in several scholarly journals including Anglia, American Speech, and Appalachian Journal, and was also involved in the Electronic Beowulf project, edited by Kevil Kiernan and produced as a CD set by the British Library and the University of Michigan Press.
