Dr. Marc CooperInstructor: Dr. Marc Cooper

I grew up in New York City, graduating from Brooklyn Tech in 1968. I married Minnesota native, Nancy Cooper in 1973. Nancy is the director of Children's Services at the Victim Center. We have one child, Aaron born in 1980. He is currently a law student. In 1979 I earned a doctorate in ancient history under the late Tom B. Jones from the University of Minnesota. Since the fall of 1980 I have taught at Missouri State University.

My academic work includes articles and papers on Sumerian history. I survived two terms chairing my department, and wrote and administered two funded Teaching American History proposals totaling more than 1.8 million dollars.

My courses used to be a conventional mix of discussion and lecture. I am now experimenting with computer-based systems including PowerPoint to make the classroom a more interesting environment. I offer undergraduate and graduate courses on ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, and Greece. This year I developed two courses: Writing II: Historical Inquiry and World History I. During the summer and fall of 2005 I will be developing World History I for Internet delivery.

I also evaluate undergraduate history programs, and consult on Teaching American History proposals. If you need some help in these areas, send me an email. I charge the usual consulting fees.

Away from the office, I enjoy hiking in the Ozarks, foreign travel, visiting New York City, designing web pages, puzzling though problems related to the Ur III dynasty, watching Deadwood and Veronica Mars on TV, and reading the Sunday NY Times while sitting on my porch drinking coffee.
