Visual Impairment Personnel Preparation Program
SPE 506 899, 3 hrs
Orientation and Mobility
Prerequisite: SPE 345 and SPE 346, or SPE 682, or departmental permission.
The course will apply practical application of orientation and mobility techniques used by the blind or visually impaired. The student will use blindfolds and low vision simulators to
perceive, integrate and react to different environmental stimuli. Development of cane techniques and use of low vision stimuli will be instructed and applied by each student in the course. Examination
and application of the fundamental principles and theory of sensory information acquisition by the visually impaired or blind as it applies to the classroom teacher will be stressed.

Instructor: Mr. Calvin Churchwell
Mr. Calvin Churchwell holds a Masters Degree from University of Arkansas as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired and Orientation and Mobility. For eleven years he worked as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist for the Arkansas School for the Blind. For the past seven years he has provided private contract services in Orientation and Mobility in Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Mr. Church well has taught the Principles of Orientation and Mobility course. |
