Physical and Health Needs of Students with Disabilities
Prerequisite: SPE 345 and SPE 346 and admitted to Teacher Education Program, or permission of department head. Focuses on the role of the special educator in management of health related issues such as monitoring medication and providing services to individuals with specialized self care needs and those with chronic illness. Emphasis will be placed on collaboration with related services staff and medical personnel as well as the integration of the student with health care needs into school and community settings.

Instructor: Dr. Paris DePaepe
Dr. Paris DePaepe is an Associate Professor of Special Education in the School of Teacher Education at Missouri State University. She came to SMSU (now Missouri State University) in 1996 after working with Dr. Richard Shores from the University of Kansas-University Affiliated Program in Parsons, Kansas on a federally funded research grant related to students with behavior disorders.
Dr. DePaepe attended the University of Minnesota and received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology-Special Education in 1994. She has more than 15 years experience teaching children and adults with mental retardation and providing behavioral consultation to teachers and parents related to challenging behavior of children. Her university teaching includes the areas of physical and health conditions of students, mental retardation, and applied behavior analysis. |
