Hello, I'm Don Smillie. I'm a CPA and a lecturer at Southwest Missouri State University and I will be your course instructor for this semester in Accounting 500: Financial Accounting Concepts for Managers. I'm excited about an instructor for you this semester. On the Internet I am looking forward to this semester with you. Accounting 500 is a graduate-level course that's designed to help you as a new graduate student in the field of business to gain an understanding of the language of business that we call Accounting. Accounting is the process of recording all of the financial transactions that are appropriate for a company and to report those to management in a way that will be meaningful, to be understood by all people that see them, and then management can use to make decisions about the business. I think you are going to find this course very exciting and I do my best to make it interesting by bring in outside current events and topics from the business world. We'll incorporate those into the textbook that covers the basic functions of accounting, the accounting equation for financial statements, balance sheet, income statement of retained earnings, and statement of cash flows. We'll do a little bit of course work to make sure that you have mastered the concepts. We'll have two or three test along the way and I also interject a project that I have written that will give you actual hands-on experience with the function of accounting. We'll actually have you produce a set of accounting records for a particular company that I have written. I think you will find this course interesting. Students in the past have found it so and I will do my best to make it an exciting time for you this semester and will help you along your way towards your goals. Thanks very much and I look forward to meeting you.
