COM 636: Concepts and Analysis of Communication in Organization My name is John Bourhis and I am an associate professor in the department of communication and mass media. It is my pleasure and privilege to be able to work with you this semester as we take a look at the role that communication plays in organizations. Well, from a communication perspective what we're primarily interested in how meanings are created and shared in an organization and the impact that those meanings have on our behavior. What I'm really going to try to do this semester is to accomplish two things. First, I want to train you in the ability to observe and analyze organizations in general but more importantly the particular organizations that you are a member of so you can analyze the ways in which meanings are created and shared in those organizations. Secondly, having developed in you the ability to do that kind of analysis I want to spend some time developing in you the ability to make strategic choices about your communication in the organizations that you are a member of so you can maximize the positive outcomes based on your analyses. We'll have a great time. We'll learn a lot and I'm really looking forward to working with you this semester. Thank you. |
